October 15, 2009 was opening night for the Henry Miller's Theatre at 124 West 43rd Street, the first new Broadway theatre in Times Square since the controversial Marquis Theatre in 1986. The show? Bye Bye Birdie in its first full-scale revival since 1960. Bank of America and the Durst Organization, partners in the construction of the adjacent, new 54-story Bank of America Tower, undertook this venture at an estimated cost of $30 million. The Roundabout Theatre Company is its tenant for the next twenty years.
Planning preceded the current economic downturn by more than fifteen years. The Empire State Development Corporation assembled much of the site, at the eastern end of the city block bounded by 42nd and 43rd Streets, just west of Sixth Avenue. The Durst Organization acquired the theatre from Henry Miller's heirs in the late 1960's. bank of America provided the capital and became the principal tenant, lending its name to the address now known as One Bryant Park.
