Excerpt:
Last summer we had a dinner party at our house, and the conversation turned to health care reform. One of our guests, an investment banker, was concerned that healthcare for all would mean poor quality care. He asked me if I thought that healthcare was a right or a privilege. It's a strange question for a physician. i cannont imagine any physician believing that healthcare for all is anything other than an absolute right like food or shelter. Until recently, it was hard for me to believe anyone else thought it was not a right either. The best answer I could provide is that practicing medicine is the privilege, and everyone else has a right to expect it. The current system, predominantly fee for service with skyrocketing costs, is unsustainable, and it leaves out 20% of the U.S. population under the age of 65.
